COUNTY CUP SURPRISE. LEEDS UNITED TAKE THE LEAD AT HUDDERSFIELD. WEST RIDING SENIOR CUP - FIRST ROUND

Teams representing Huddersfield Town and Leeds United met at Leeds Road to-day in the first round of the West Riding Senior Cup. Neither side was quite at full strength, and there was only a meagre attendance at the start - a striking commentary on how the public value competitions for County Association honours. Teams:

Huddersfield Town: Boot; Goodall, Wadsworth; Steele, Wilson (T.), Watson; Williams, Brown, A.W. Smith, Cook and W.H. Smith.

Leeds United: Johnson; Kirkpatrick, Menzies; Mason, L.H. Baker, Smith; Coates, Whipp, Richmond, Clark, Harris.

Play opened very quietly. Any advantage there was rested with Leeds through good work by Harris. Wadsworth stopped Menzies progress, and a smart move by Cook and W. H. Smith threatened danger, but the outside left was upset by the Leeds Smith. The ball travelled to the other end on the Leeds right; but Goodall relieved cleverly, and A.W. and W.H. Smith were in action again. Williams tricked Mason, but Kirkpatrick saved the situation. Brown shot wide after good work by Steele and Williams.

United had more of the play for a time, but the forwards lacked finishing power. The Town again got moving, and from W.H. Smith's centre Brown shot over the bar just as he was whistled offside. A.W. Smith ran through nearly to goal; but Menzies prevented him getting in his shot. Johnson fisted out from Williams, and a moment later saved a hot shot from A.W. Smith. He could not hold the ball; but Menzies kicked the ball away from a corner. United raced away, and Coates placed a perfect centre which Boot fisted out. Try as they would, Town could not score, Brown heading over from a centre by Williams, and a moment later A.W. Smith skimmed the top of the bar. After 42 minutes, Richmond, receiving from Whipp, scored for United. It was the outcome of a miskick by Goodall; which the United forwards cleverly followed up.

Half-time score:- Leeds United 1 Huddersfield Town 0.

Town became dangerous in the first minute, when A.W. Smith ran through, but crossed too far forward for W. H. Smith, whose centre sent the ball behind. Williams twice ran well round Smith and Menzies, and on the second occasion he closed in towards goal, but his shot went behind. A promising movement by United resulted in Clark ballooning a ball over the goal from a neat centre by Harris. Johnson was applauded for a fine save from Brown, but a moment later Cook placed the ball into the net from a neat centre by Williams thus equalising.

RESULT:- HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 3 LEEDS UNITED 1

WEST RIDING CUP.

LEEDS UNITED BEATEN AT HUDDERSFIELD.

Huddersfield Town defeated Leeds United in the first round of the West Riding Cup at Leeds Road yesterday, but Leeds United were not at full strength. In the first half the home team had many chances of scoring, but the finishing of A.W. Smith and Brown was very poor. There was a rally by Leeds United just before the interval, and it led to a goal by Richmond from Whipp's centre.

In the second half the quality of the United defence fell off considerably, and a stronger effort by the Huddersfield forwards led to the home team winning comfortably. Cook scored three goals, and so performed the "hat-trick", and each of the movements from which the goals came was initiated from the right wing. The home team always appeared to have their opponents under control, but the game generally was tame and disappointing. Result:- Huddersfield Town 3 goals Leeeds United 1 goal.

Teams:- Huddersfield Town: Booth, goal; Goodall and Wadsworth, full backs; Steele, T. Wilson and Watson, half backs; Williams, Brown, A.W. Smith, Cook and W.H. Smith, forwards.

Leeds United: Johnson, goal; Kirkpatrick and Menzies, full backs; Mason, L.H. Baker and Smith, half backs; Coates, Whipp, Richmond, Clark and Harris, forwards.
